Don Dobbs announced that SBE is sponsoring an all day meeting in January for enhancing Chapter Programs as part of continuing education.  The all day meeting will be held at the Indianapolis Airport. SBE National is encouraging every Chapter to send a representative to this meeting.   Don asked if there was support to use Chapter funds to pay for Representative to attend the January Meeting.

Don also suggested that the January Chapter 56 meeting be a DTV focused meeting with GMs from the Tulsa Market invited by the Chapter as well as their Chiefs to attend a discussion on the challenges remaining to launching DTV (such as Power Consumption, City Grade Coverage, as well as Must Carry Cable issues).  Don suggested a Letter be sent to each GM inviting their attendance.  Membership present approved his suggestion.

Don also reported that March is time for Chapter Officer Elections.  He is seeking nominations for the various offices as he will be stepping down after this term.  A nomination committee will be formed to aid the process.

Don also reminded the members that their will be no meeting in December as per usual.

A belated New Year's Resolution.....
Safety Goals: Better late than never!

From the Editor, Mark Bell.

In the beginning, everybody wants to be safe. But, like many of those “things” which we want to do, but don’t always carry out, safety ideas fade into the human characteristic of complacency.  Typically, it takes an accident to re-sharpen a “once sharp” company safety program. (It’s not just in TV stations this occurs, it’s typical in most work environments.) Through it all, it’s important to keep trying. Sometimes simple safety reminders are the best safety education devices. That, after all, is the rhyme and reason for this safety memo. If you hear about safety enough it is more likely to become part of your reflexive thought process.

So, in view of this being a new year and all of that, (Happy New Year!) here are some resolutions which take just a little work, but produce a lot of return.

Professionalism

Safety is as much a part of professionalism in any work environment as other factors. Could you imagine going to a doctor or dentist who knew little about the instruments of their trade? How about if they were operating a piece of equipment they only knew how to use from being shown through a 15 minute demonstration by a colleague? Sound familiar? Every van has an operators manual put together by the vehicle integrator. Ever seen it? Somebody took the time to put together information which evolved from the successes and failures of other operators. It’s valuable, but you have to read it.

Resolve

TV field people routinely work along side public service professionals who have special employment agreements if they are injured or disabled while on the job.  Whether TV stations offer this sort of benefit or not, all professionals need to think safety all the time. One favorite news director stated: "If my people protect themselves, they will also be protecting their companies and the general public." It could not have been said better.

We agree. Have a Happy and safe new year!

The last statewide Required Monthly Test was on January 8, 2002 at 11:15 a.m.  However, it did not get passed along here in the Tulsa area.  We have corrected the problem.  However, you will want to check your EAS logs if you have not done so.  Make notations that the RMT was not passed on to you from the LPs.

If you are interested in a form for logging your EAS tests, email me at rherring@ktul.com
